Software that takes action, smartly, on your behalf. It analyzes information from many possible sources, makes decisions through LLM thinking, and executes tasks without waiting for your next instruction.
Their “system prompt” dictates their fundamental purpose and focus. Their work can be triggered by human input, environmental input, time-based triggers and more.
AI Agents differ from classical automation in that they have memory and continuously assess data within their environment (a conversation, exploring a topic, etc) to determine their next steps, outputs and whether or not their process is complete. Agents may or may not involve ‘humans in the loop’ for input, review, confirmation, etc.
Frankly, this is a topic of much debate. Many times, the lines between agents and other classifications of software can be blurry. It’s not really a necessary debate in our opinion, as long as you generally get the idea of AI Agents.
Put AI to use.
